The Boss DS-1 is the pedal with the longest production run in history and it’s one of the biggest selling pedals of all time.
It has been on the pedalboard of guitar players like Steve Vai, Kurt Cobain, Joe Satriani, John Frusciante, Mike Stern, and Prince, just to name a few.
The DS-1 was the first distortion pedal made by Boss Corporation. It has been in production since 1978 and is one of the most recognisable pedals made by the legendary company. Over the years, the pedal’s circuit has remained pretty much the same, but the original core component of the pedal, the pre-amplifier, was later replaced with the OP-AMP chip, and the chip has changed several times.
Watch our video above comparing three different models of the pedal. The first is my trusted 1989 version given to me by my father 30 years ago. The second is a 1994 version, made in Taiwan. And, the pedal on the right is the 2022 version, made in Malaysia. You'd be surprised what tonal differences they present.
